A £900,000 mirror sculpture destined for a square in Nottingham, will have to be shielded to prevent it focusing the Sun's rays and barbecuing birds. "Direct sunlight hitting the mirror would be focused into a beam only a few centimetres across, as hot as the surface of the Sun" said astronomer Michael Merrifield. "Concentrating tens of kilowatts into a tiny area is not something to mess with."
